Before the Golden Globes, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin took to Instagram to share a hilarious selfie of her client, Emma Stone. In the pic, the La La Land actress is looking crazy-eyed into the camera with a smattering of pink goo over her mouth. On first glance, it looks like Stone was blowing a massive bubble and it popped all over her face. But Goodwin’s caption explains what’s really going on: “Some say beauty is pain, others say it just ridiculous! And so is prepping for the #goldenglobes with this hilarious human being! #koreanskincaresilliness.” Stone was actually prepping for her big night with the KNC Beauty All Natural Collagen Infused Lip Mask, a favorite of other celebs like Kim Kardashian and Teyana Taylor. The KNC Beauty mask is a new, all-natural twist on popular Korean beauty (also known as K-beauty) lip masks. KNC says their mask blends “rose flower oil, cherry extract and vitamin E” to plump, hydrate, moisturize, and condition lips. And Goodwin is a pretty big fan.
“I’m obsessed with them, as a lot of makeup artists are,” Goodwin tells SELF. “Something that I do on all my clients before a big event is make sure that we prep the skin and the lips really well before makeup, because it really affects the way that makeup looks and lasts. So this particular mask is targeted for the lip area, and you look absolutely silly but they really do work.”
GOODWIN SAYS THE MASK MAKES LIPS FEEL “REALLY SOFT AND REALLY PLUMP,” AND THE EFFECTS ARE NOTICEABLE FOR FIVE TO SIX HOURS AFTERWARDS. “IT JUST MAKES LIPSTICK LOOK MUCH SMOOTHER AND YOUR LIPS LOOK FULLER, SO IF YOU’RE WEARING A LIGHTER COLOR YOUR LIPS HAVE A NICE FULLNESS OR LUSHNESS ABOUT THEM.” NATURALLY, I HAD TO GET MY HANDS ON A KNC LIP MASK TO SEE HOW IT WORKED FOR MYSELF.
THE LIP MASKS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE AT KNCBEAUTY.COM, AND A PACK OF FIVE LIP MASKS RETAILS FOR $24.99. THE MASK ITSELF IS PALM-SIZED, AND IT’S IN THE SHAPE OF AN OVERSIZED PAIR OF PINK LIPS, MAKING IT PERFECT FOR SELFIES. THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY TO WEAR THE MASK FOR 15-20 MINUTES TO SEE RESULTS, AND I WAS SO #DTLM—DOWN TO LIP MASK.
WHEN I OPENED UP THE MASK, I EXPECTED IT TO BE A BIT FLIMSY AND THIN LIKE A TYPICAL KOREAN FACE MASK. BUT IT’S ACTUALLY PRETTY THICK, ALMOST LIKE THOSE STICKY SNOWFLAKES YOU CAN BUY TO STICK ON WINDOWS. IT HAS A SLIT IN THE MIDDLE—SPLITTING THE TWO LIPS, OF COURSE—AND ONE SIDE OF THE MASK IS WET WITH THE LIP PLUMPING INGREDIENTS. WITHOUT HESITATING, I PICKED UP THE LIPS AND SLAPPED THEM ON MY MOUTH, EXPECTING THEM TO STICK LIKE GLUE. BUT AFTER ONE SECOND THE MASK PROMPTLY STARTED SLIDING OFF. IT TOOK ABOUT 30 SECONDS OF FINAGLING FOR ME TO GET IT TO ACTUALLY STICK TO MY LIPS, BUT ONCE IT WAS ON IT STAYED PUT AS LONG AS I DIDN’T OPEN MY MOUTH.
WHEN I FIRST PUT ON THE MASK, IT KIND OF JUST FELT COLD AND GOOEY. BUT SLOWLY, A TINGLY SENSATION STARTED TO KICK IN. THE KNC BEAUTY WEBSITE SAYS THAT’S THE COLLAGEN KICKING IN. THE TINGLING NEVER GOT TOO INTENSE, WHICH WAS NICE. I’VE USED LIP PLUMPING GLOSSES IN THE PAST THAT MADE MY LIPS FEEL LIKE THEY WERE LITERALLY ON FIRE, AND I WAS NOT A FAN. WHEN MY 15 MINUTES WERE UP, I PULLED OFF THE MASK AND RAN OVER TO MY CO-WORKER, SHOUTING, “DO MY LIPS LOOK BIGGER THAN USUAL?!” HER RESPONSE: “UM, I DON’T USUALLY STARE AT YOUR LIPS.” A VERY VALID RESPONSE. SO I TURNED TO MY BEFORE-AND-AFTER PHOTOS TO SEE IF I COULD SPOT A CHANGE.
LOOKING AT THE TWO PHOTOS, I COULDN’T REALLY SEE A HUGE NEW “PLUMP” IN MY LIPS. BUT THEY DID LOOK LIKE THEY HAD A BIT MORE “LIFE” POST-KNC BEAUTY MASK—THEY LOOKED SMOOTHER AND HAD A HEALTHIER “GLOW” TO THEM. AND I FELT THE BENEFITS OF THE MASK, TOO. THE TINGLING SENSATION STOPPED RIGHT AFTER I TOOK THE MASK OFF, BUT THE MOISTURIZING BENEFITS LASTED HOURS. I DIDN’T FIND MYSELF REACHING FOR MY CHAPSTICK LIKE I USUALLY DO EVERY HOUR. AND WHEN I SWIPED ON SOME LIGHT LIPSTICK LATER IN THE DAY, IT GLIDED ACROSS MY LIPS LIKE BUTTER.
SO, WHAT’S MY OVERALL REVIEW OF THE LIP MASK? IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO HYDRATE YOUR LIPS, IT WILL DEFINITELY DO THE TRICK. BUT DON’T EXPECT IT TO PLUMP UP YOUR LIPS TO A WHOLE NEW VOLUPTUOUS SIZE. IF YOU ~CLOSELY EXAMINE~ EMMA STONE’S FINAL LOOK FOR THE GOLDEN GLOBES, YOU CAN SEE THAT HER LIPS—PERFECTLY COATED IN NARS’ ROSECLIFF SATIN LIPSTICK—DON’T LOOK LARGER THAN USUAL, BUT THEY DO LOOK DAMN LUSH.
AND THAT’S HOW I FELT AFTER USING THE KNC LIP MASK—MY LIPS WERE SMOOTHER THAN EVER, AND THAT MADE ME PRETTY PLEASED. AND, YES, I GOT A HILARIOUS SELFIE OUT OF IT, TOO.
